Seven Charlotte Latin students receive Scholastic art and writing awards

Charlotte Latin school students Caroline Chiaroni, Won Geong Jeong, Lea Kokenes, Ashley Medeiros, Waseem Nafisi, Kathryn Watts and Connie Zhou are the recipients of national awards in the 2010 Scholastic Art and Writing competition.

These students received the following national awards:

American Voices medal:
Caroline Chiaroni, poetry collection, “Newfound Magic”

Gold medal:
Kathryn Watts, poetry collection, “Seven Tree Rings”

Connie Zhou, science fiction/fantasy, "Troll Bridge-A Memoir"

Silver medal:
Lea Kokenes, drawing
Won Kyung Jeong, poetry, “Shanghai’s Genuine Panacea”
Ashley Medeiros, persuasive writing, “Steve Irwin’s Dream Shoes: Crocs”
Waseem Nafisi, drawing

Of the 150,000 works that were submitted to regional affiliates for the Scholastic competition, approximately 10,000 works were honored as regional Gold Key winners and were subsequently reviewed by panels of professionals in the visual and literary arts for the national awards. One thousand of those works have received gold medals, silver medals and American Vision and Voices medals.

These accomplished students are invited to New York City to attend the National Awards Ceremony at Carnegie Hall on June 9. National award winners also are invited to participate in a variety of creative workshops and activities around New York City, including a student reading at Bryant Park that is open to the public.

Charlotte Latin students receive 65 Scholastic awards

Forty-three Charlotte Latin School art students have received honors for their work in the 2010 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition. Administered by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, this national competition recognizes students in grades 7-12. Each year, the Alliance receives thousands of works, submitted through its regional affiliates for consideration in more than 25 categories of art and writing.

Regional Gold Key winners have advanced to the national competition in New York City.

The following students were recognized with art awards:
