Hawks Keeping Eye On Season End Goals
Thursday night January 24th there was some good team competition at the pool. Latin hosted a double dual between Lake Norman Charter, and Charlotte Country Day. On the girls side of the scorecard Latin topped Charlotte Country Day by a score of 50.00-40.00 and the Latin girls were defeated by Lake Norman Charter by a score of 48-46. Our girls were minus freshman Christina Glaser who specializes in sprint freestyle and impacts the meet individually and on relays. Although we missed Christina, we were excited to welcome Chapman Hughes back to action. She has been dealing with tendonitis and continues to get better through a regiment of rest and re-hab.
On the men’s side of the meet, Latin was behind the eight ball, missing Senior sensation Michael Chadwick (out recovering from a concussion) and freshman Jackson Dickey (out with 8 stitches in his head). Both Jackson and Michael came out to support the team. Nice to have them there encouraging their teammates. Hopefully both swimmers will be back in action this coming Tuesday. The scores were Lake Norman Charter 58 and Latin 35 and Charlotte Country Day 57 Latin 38.00.
If you look at the results we won a ton of events, but only scored one person in all events but two. When we have dominated teams we have scored two people in the majority of events, individual and relays. When you get defeated by two points….a few third places (1pt) put you in the winning column. So never, ever think your swim is not important! Scoring two in the majority of events is a winning formula. If you look below there were only two events where Latin scored two. When we have all swimmers present it will be easier to achieve.
The biggest bust out swim of the night came from Michaela Berens. She dropped 4 seconds in the 100 Fly! Michaela is most consistent person attending practice and she started working on being able to swim the 100 Fly around Christmas. That work is paying off now and it will be exciting to see her keep improving to the end of the season. Her willingness to do the work that is required to be successful, and to get out of her comfort zone in practice has fueled her success. Keep it going!
This is the time of the season to buckle down. Our total focus needs to be getting to practice to fine tune strokes and skills (turning, starting, race skills) and get race ready. All swimmers are working hard to finish the season with personal best times. If each swimmer can improve individually, then collectively we can achieve our goals of capturing the Conference titles and making a run at the State Championship. Let’s go Hawks

HAWK SWIMMERS START POST HOLIDAY COMPETITION
Tis the season……..to prepare for the second half of our season. The first half laid a basic foundation of skills and now it is time to get to work. Seven days back together training and the Hawks swimmers were back in action as a part of the Winter Sports Showcase! We had a fantastic crowd…high spirited and routing for the home team.
Our double dual meet was between the Cannon School and Grace Academy. In our first encounter with conference rival Cannon School we were without teammate Chapman Hughes, and we found ourselves in the same position last Friday night. In the November meeting we were defeated on the women’s side by 14 points. Even without Chapman we knew we had a chance and there were some adjustments to the line-up. If races went perfectly to prediction the meet would come down to the last relay. As predicted, the meet did come down to the last relay and we were narrowly defeated by a mere .13 seconds and ended up falling two points short of Cannon. They won the girls meet 48.00 to 46.00. We could if ourselves to death, but we had a strong planned but uncharacteristically faltered on the relays, falling to Cannon 3 out of three relays. Great job, and we will see them two more times, Conference on February 7th and States on February 18th. Latin really enjoys swimming Grace Academy and GA brings some really good athletes to the meet; they get hurt on their depth. Latin women easily eclipsed Grace Academy by a score of 69 to 24.
On the men’s side of the meet we were without Hayes McCullagh who was on an official visit at the Navel Academy. Our boys team has a ton of versatility and our men were victorious in both e meets by the following scores: Charlotte Latin 70 Grace Academy 13 Charlotte Latin 66 Cannon School 25.
There were some really great performances put in, athletes really getting out of their comfort zone to do what was best for the team….Natalie Gaines in the 500 Free, Audrey Trollinger in the 200 Free, and Michaela Berens swimming her first 100 Fly in competition. Coleman Campbell upped his game by getting improved diving and he blasted two best times! Annissa Mignardi did what Seniors do, she handled a very tough event program and came through with flying colors. Eleanor Smith turned in some very improved freestyle swims. Jackson Dickey again, pulled out the breaststroke by .12!
Individual double event winners include: Ashley Dyke 100/200 Free, Rozhina McClanahan 200 IM & 100 Brst, Michael Chadwick 100 & 200 Free, Madison Jaulin, 100 Back and 200 IM and Jackson Dickey in the 50 Free and the 100 Breast. Adding to the victory column was Hope Dragelin in the 500 Free, Jack Ratteree in the 500 Free
And James Hardy in the 100 Free.
Great job everyone. Keep learning and pushing it at practice! The best is yet to come.

On the girls side of the meet, Latin is still reeling from not having leading scorer Lindsay Bosek. Lindsay is in recovery mode from mono and is hopeful to return before Conference and/or States. Keep on healing Lindsay….we miss you! With Lindsay out all girls are in step up mode. Charlotte Latin Girls defeated Cannon High School by a score of 56 to 38. Country Day beat Latin 63 to 31. Country Day Women are definitely in the hunt for the State Championship and are always a great team to race.
At the end of the meet swimmers are acknowledged for special things by being awarded a “Tough Nut” award. At this meet we had the following winners of the “Tough Nut” award: William Gardner……awesome come from behind victory in the 50 Free…..Junior Winn Holt first time under 25 seconds in the 50 free…..Freshman Emily Asinger for breaking 1:30 in the 100 Breast, Senior Morgan Henry for dropping 8 seconds in her 100 free, Senior Sameer Sajja for cutting 18 seconds of his best 500 Free time…..Junior Michael Chadwick for doing a lifetime best time in the 500 free……and Junior Hank Sprow for performing in his first meet post mono……Karen Gardner was also awarded a “Tough Nut” for her strength and determination as she battles cancer. Karen, the Hawks Team is behind you!
Next up for the Hawks will be an away meet Thursday January 27th at Charlotte Christian. February 1st will be Senior night against Marvin Ridge and Calvary Baptist School. Then it is on to Conference on February 10th hosted by Charlotte Latin….and then finally on to States on February 21st in Cary. Let’s go Hawks!

Individual and relay state champions include: Ellen Grigg, Amy Masters, Jo Perry, Cecily and Christa Holt. Second place relay finishers also included Cecily Shaw. Many of the swimmers had personal bests and the enthusiasm and support from all the players and parents was terrific. Coach Howard, Doc, and Coach Z are very proud of how hard you swam this season and how you supported each other. It’s been a pleasure and honor to work with you. See you all at the banquet on Wednesday.
