Going into yesterday's game, the girls knew that they would have to play a flawless game to beat the #1 seed and undefeated Lady Knights. The team played tough defense in the first quarter and were able to score 3 baskets, keeping the game close (10-6) by the end of the first quarter. Our defensive intensity continued into the second quarter, but our offense was stiffled by Christian's aggressive defensive, and we went into the locker room trailing by the score of 19-8. In the third quarter our defense was unable to slow down the Knights' offense and they doubled their score. The girls gave all they had, but the Knights were just too good. Kiera Dowell and Elly Anderson led the team in scoring with 4 points each, and Kassie Nielsen and Taylor Woolen scored 2 points. The Hawks finished the season with a record of 6-10 overall and 5-9 in the conference.

In our last game of the season we got off to a great start and led 16-5 at the end of the first quarter and 21-10 at the half. We played good team defense and may have done our best job all season of rebounding on the offensive end of the floor. Garland Austin had 17 points, Amma Okwara had 9, Sarah Black had 5 points, Tyler Cooney had 4, Ann Baynard and Liza Robinson had 2 points apiece and Katharina Miles added a free throw. Our players, our scorekeepers and our parents were great. Thank you! We finished the season at 10-8.

We entered this tournament game with a great game plan and a new defense that was ideal for our opponent. We stuck with our game plan and were able to only trail by 2 at the end of the third quarter (after getting 14 points in the quarter from Garland Austin). Perhaps we just ran out of energy. Lake Norman has a good team though and had 8 players score for them. Garland ended up with 22 points (4 field goals, 4 3-pointers, and 2 for 7 from the free throw line). Tyler Cooney and Amma Okwara added 4 points apiece, Katharina Miles had 3 points and Sarah Black added a field goal. Record 9-8.

WOW what a great start for us. Garland had 14 of her 16 points in the first quarter as she hit her first four shots (all three-pointers) and added a couple of free throws. We broke out to an 18-6 lead at the end of the quarter and the contest was never in question after that. Southlake Christian played hard the whole game and were just "outmanned" on this afternoon. Garland led all scorers with 16 points (and had numerous assists). Amma had 14 points basically the result of steals in the open court. Sarah had 7 points, Liza had, Katharina had 4, Tyler hit a three-pointer, Myers added a field goal and Rebecca contributed a free throw. We now get ready for the tournament and then our last game against Covenant Day School. Record 9-7

Score: Country Day 20 Latin 10
There isn't much positive to write about this game. This was the 3rd time we played Country Day and we were not able to do anything very well. We missed every shot we took from the field, except 3 and we were 3 of 14 from the free throw line. It appeared that it was going to be close as the score was 10-8 at the half in favor of Country Day. However, in the second half we only scored one basket and therefore we suffered another loss. The one thing we did do better as the game progressed was that our offensive rebounding improved. It was a disappointing effort by a team that is much better than they demonstrated. We'll look forward to our next game, Southlake Christian, prior to the start of the tournament. Record 8-7

We had to play this game (on January 14) without Garland as she was injured in practice and was unable to play. The team responded by holding Christian to 2 field goals in the first half and leading 15-4. Christian came back in the second half and outscored us 16-15. The coaches were pleased with the overall team defense and the way each player stepped up their contribution in this game. Ann lead all scorers with 8 points, Caroline had 6 (on two 3 pointers), Tyler, Amma and Myers had 4 apiece, Sarah had 2 and Katharina had 1. Record 8-6

We walked into the gym at Lake Norman and there were about 300 screaming middle schoolers there to watch the game. It was the largest crowd we have played in front of so far this season. Lake Norman used the crowd to their advantage as they pulled out to a 15-9 and 23-10 lead at the first two intervals. We finished strong with them only outscoring us by 1 in the final two periods. They outscored us 21-7 from the field and we outscored them 4-0 behind the three-point line. Garland had 11 points, Caroline had 7, Tyler and Amma had 3 apiece, Sarah, Myers and Liza had two points apiece and Katharina added a free throw. Record 7-6

This was our first game of the new year, as well as our first game in almost 3 weeks. We played PD nose to nose on both ends of the floor, but were just unable to execute the things we have practiced since the first day of practice. Additionally, we couldn't overcome a great 15 point performance from their standout player. Regardless, we were never out of this game until the final horn sounded. Tyler and Liza had 6 points apiece, Garland had 5, Sarah and Ann had 2 apiece, and Amma added a free throw. Hopefully, this game will help us get better at remembering how to do the fundamentals needed to win a close game. Record 7-5

This was the first game of the Golden Corral Christmas Tournament. We have been working hard at playing better team defense. In this game we got out to a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Additionally we did not let our opponent score in the 3rd quarter. That can only be accomplished by good team defense. Every player got some good playing time and therefore contributed to our success. It was a good team victory. We had to work hard to get this win. Cannon has a player that can be dominating and intimidating, if you let her. We did that and were down 10 points at one time. However, we outscored Cannon 28-11 in the second half to secure our fifth win. We were able to get 7 players to score for us and when that happens we most likely will win. Garland had 11 points, followed by Sarah with 8 (and 6 of 9 from the line), Caroline had 7 points and played her best game so far this season, Amma and Liza had 6 apiece, Anne had 4, Tyler 3 and Myers added a field goal.

We seemed to let down and bit in the second half for whatever reason. We were only down one at the half, but let one of the Lake Norman players score 15 of her 19 points in the second half. We did not play good team defense and as we know, that will never win ball games. Garland Austin led the team with ten points. Amma, Katherarina, Sarah and Caroline added 4 points apiece and
Anne contributed a first quarter field goal. We must do a better job of helping each other on defense...that is the key to a good "man to man" defense.

We played great team defense for the majority of the game and never allowed them more than single digits in any quarter. We were able to score eight points from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and held on for the win. This seemed to be a game where each team had some low points followed by bursts of defensive and offensive energy. Fortunately, Latin's bursts were more dominant. We should be especially proud of our defensive effort in the last quarter of the game. Another aspect of the game (and not a good one for Latin) was that we didn't score from about the four minute mark of the second quarter, when Austin hit a free throw until Amma's bank shot at about the 3 minute mark in the third quarter. We only scored 1 point in the second quarter and after Okwara's shot Sarah followed a couple of great rebounds with good baskets. McGarry added two quick back to back baskets in the fourth quarter which gave us a lead that we were able to seal with Austin getting 11 of her 15 points in the same quarter. Black had 9 points, Caroline 5, Myers had 4 and Liza and Amma added 2 apiece. It was a good victory against a good team.

This game against rival Charlotte Christian took place on December 4 in the SAC. We did not play exceptionally well on the defensive end of the court. As Coach Smith said after the game, "The object of the game is to not let the other team score. I'd rather we win 4-0 than like we did tonight." Eight of the players from Christian scored, as well as eight from our team. We almost had ten score as Tyler and Elyse had some free throws that were just good shots that didn't go through the net. Garland had twenty points and Liza had ten. All of Liza's points were due to great passes and her being exactly where she should have been. Sarah had 6, as did Ann. It was a foul ridden game as there were a total of 63 foul shots (we were 12 for 29 and they were 11 for 34). Austin led the team with 11 points. Okwara had 8, Baynard and Robinson added six apiece, Kelly had 4, Black had 3, Fullwood 2 and Miles added a free throw. Eight of the eleven players dressed for the game scored.
